The Road Home

I'm in charge of the combined YM/YW activity this month.. the youth are going to the Road Home Homeless Shelter to serve dinner. The youth have served a few times before and loved the experience.

The only tricky part about the activity is that we have to provide ALL of the food, as well.  We're serving the women's shelter (60 people) and the family shelter (100) people.

To say it's been a lot work is an understatement...I've been in charge of creating the menus, getting all items donated by sending sign ups around church the past few weeks, collecting all of the food, and cooking/assembling before we go tomorrow.  We will leave the church at 4:45pm, unload and set up from 6-6:30pm, serve the homeless for about an hour, clean up and make the trek back home.

The only other time I've had experience with planning meals in this quantity was when I was the activities chair in our old ward.  There was something so much easier about just ordering the bulk of the food. :)

I haven't necessarily been aware of the little listening ears around me.  As our doorbell rang time and time again yesterday with families donating food, Mylie knew exactly why they were here.  As she would help me load in the food in the fridge, she'd say, "This is for all the people that don't have food, huh? Your YW are giving it to them, huh? That's nice."

It caught me off guard.  She was paying attention to all of it! During family prayer last night, she said she was thankful for the YW feeding people that didn't have any and also blessed us to come home safely after feeding them.

How in tune my little girl is! I'm so grateful that she's aware and recognizing the service that takes place around her.

Sometimes it breaks my heart when I get dressed (sad) or buy something different... she'll say, "Are you going to YWs? Is that for YWs?" It's so hard dedicating so much time away from my little family. It's a full time job at the moment and my plate is a little full.

But.. I'm so grateful to know she gets it. At least to a certain degree. One day, she'll have a greater understanding of the reason why.

Probably shouldn't have read this at work, cause now I'm all tears! But what a sweet special spirit Mylie has. I guess it makes you realize no matter how young children are, they are learning by what is going on around them. I love that little girl, and love you for magnifying your calling so well. You are making a difference in so many peoples lives, the homeless, the YW, and most importantly, your own family. You are the best, and I wish I had been out there to help you! Talk with you soon!

WOW! What an amazing little girl! What great lessons you are teaching her (by example) and what an amazing little girl to be able to recognize the service that is going on around her. What a blessing.
