..oh, camping we did go! (Did you sing that? If not, please reread and sing it in your mind or outloud. I highly recommend it. ) Can you believe we did it? I can't believe it, especially after this "test" in our backyard a few weeks ago! Apparently, we're easily persuaded by awesome people. You know what else I can't believe?? I didn't take ONE picture. Seriously. I'm appalled. Shocked. Embarrassed. What was I doing?? Luke's first camping trip and I failed. Okay.. okay.. enough of the pity party. I'm positive we're going again.. I'll attempt to stop living in the moment and document for Pete's sake! Bear with me.. this recap won't be nearly as entertaining without photos.
We headed up Big Cottonwood Canyon Friday night with our good friends the Dressens and Maynards. Ben headed up early Friday to claim a spot-- come to find out, he got the last one in the whole canyon! What a champ for driving up there in the morning, huh?? Anyway, the last spot left or last made up spot was enormous and rocky. We were thrilled just to be there and made do. We had our own meadow, filled with moose tracks and tons of rocks for the kids to climb on and hop over.
The kids were in heaven. We had quite the crew... Maynard gang (3 kiddos) plus Dressen gang (4 kiddos) plus our kiddos... yes.. that's 9! Glad we survived that math. It was so amazing to watch the kids romp around in the wilderness and find joy in the little things, like bugs, rocks, squirrels and the like. That's what life's all about. The tranquility in the mountains is encompassing and I simply love it. Possibly because it reminds me of home. You're away from the hustle and bustle-- and can just "be". Can you tell I'm a fan??
We spent the night cooking dinner, roasting yummy treats and chatting away. Mylie actually begged to go to bed. Interesting. I headed back to our tent and laid with the kids. I can't even begin to describe how hilarious Luke was. He repeated over and over again... "Ah's fun. Ah's fun. Ah's fun." Translation= It's fun. Then I would remind him that it was bed time and that he needed to be quiet. He'd then cover his mouth with his hand and say in a whisper, "I quiet. I quiet." This exchange cracked me up. This little boy couldn't stop talking!! He finally stopped saying it was fun and resorted only to saying he was quiet. I was so proud of the kids for going to bed so easily!! That made the trip for me.
We woke up in the morning and had our potluck. Our contribution was parfaits! Can you believe it?? My dear husband thought I was crazy but I was confident that it would be yummy. Come to find out, it was the perfect appetizer while we waited for the bacon and eggs/sausage to cook. Yes. Success. I went with my hunch. Deep down...everybody loves chick food... even our mountain men.
We packed things up pretty quickly because we had to get Mylie home for a birthday party. I wish we could've stuck around and done a hike... next time.. next time my friends.
All in all, it was a huge success. No injuries. No lost friendships... at least on our end! :) It was awesome. We're anxious to do it again. Thanks for the invite, Maynards!! We're hooked.
