One of my very favorite childhood traditions was centered on Baby Jesus. My mom would put a wooden manger by our Christmas tree and next to it would be a basket full of straw bundles. Throughout December, we were encouraged to be kind and do good deeds for one another. After completing an act of kindness, we’d write the deed on the slip of paper attached to the straw bundle and lay it in the manger. The purpose of the straw bundles was to create a soft bed for the Baby Jesus.
However, if we forgot about the true spirit of Christmas, loving and serving one another, straw was removed from the manger. On Christmas morning, if there was enough straw, we would find Baby Jesus lying in the manger.
One year, we all were incredibly naughty—arguing and fighting all month. Sure enough, Christmas morning, there was an empty manger. My mom then went on to explain that Baby Jesus couldn’t come to a home that was filled with contention and couldn’t sleep in a manger that didn’t have enough straw. We all were stunned. As much as we wanted Him to, Baby Jesus couldn't reside somewhere filled with contention. What a great lesson!
For years, I have been excited to start this tradition with our little family. The kids are finally old enough to get it. My mom brought one of my childhood Baby Jesus dolls with her at Thanksgiving and Justin was kind enough to build a beautiful manger.
Our tradition is well under way and it's been so fun to recognize the wonderful acts of service the kids are doing. I threatened to remove some bundles the other day and it was amazing to see Mylie's reaction. She was willing to do whatever it took to keep the straw in the manger.
I'm really looking forward to Christmas morning. I'm praying Baby Jesus will be able to visit our family. I can't think of a more perfect way to start Christmas morning than looking for Baby Jesus.
The manger alongside the tree... didn't he do a fabulous job??
The remaining straw bundles waiting for acts of service and love...
